高考英語閱讀練習題及答案解析 1
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking.
36 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring.
37 As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exit today. So maybe you love car racing or maybe you hate it.
38
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientist say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years.
39 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
40 For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A. It all depends on your character.
B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C. Being better at those things means a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move out of your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weight risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

高考英語閱讀練習題及答案解析 3
You’re in your office when you learn there’s someone with a gun wandering outside. You can hear gunshots and screams. What do you do?
That’s the challenge for users of a new virtual (虛擬)reality program called SurviVR, designed to train employees how to deal with an active shooter situation in the workplace. The program works with HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset released earlier this year.
An active shooter situation is when an armed person or people actively shoot in a small, populated area with the intention to kill. There were 20 such situations in the United States last year and 20 the year before, according to FBI statistics, resulting in a total of 231 deaths. This year saw the deadliest active shooter situation in US history , with 49 people killed in a nightclub in Orlando.
In the training situation, users have four choices. They can lock themselves in the office. They can hide, perhaps in the office closet. They can run for an exit. Or they can use something in the office—a computer or a cup a pair of scissors-as a weapon to fight the shooter. This is an improvement on standard active shooter training. Gallo says, which typically teachers people to lock themselves in place and hide. The “lock down” method is often ineffective, he says, and has resulted in many deaths in recent years.
In the training’s basic level, no one gets killed. But as the trainings become more advanced, players who make a wrong choice be shot. There’s no blood; the screen simply turns black slowly.
If this sounds terrifying, that’s the point, says Gallo. There are plenty of training programs to teach employees how to deal with workplace violence, sometimes involving role play with toy guns. But these trainings are basically games. Gallo says, with employees relaxed and even enjoying themselves. To teach people what they really need to know for an active shooter situation, they need to be scared.
“SurviVR will take the fear and turn it into confidence.” Gallo says.
32. What’s the author’s purpose of describing a dangerous scene in Para. 1?
A. To attract the readers’ attention on the new virtual reality program.
B. To show the challenge that the readers are required to face.
C. To warn the readers of the possible dangers in the working place.
D. To inform the readers of the correct response in such a situation
33. What is the suggested response in the standard active shooter training?
A. Fighting the shooter B. Running for the exit
C. Using a computer as a weapon D. Locking down
34. What does Gallo think of the training programs involving role play with toy guns?
A. Searing B. Violent C. Ineffective D. Helpful
35. What would be the best title?
A. A New Virtual Reality Program on Active Shooter Training
B. What Should You Do When Meeting Gunshots in the Workplace?
C. How to Deal with an Active Shooter Situation?
D. Employees Need to Be Scared of the Workplace Violence.
【答案】ADCA

How did your friendships begin? Most start with a short conversation on a random day.Asking about a homework assignment in class or complaining about your sore legs after playing in a soccer game, you found your best pal by accident. “Small talk is where all your relationships begin,”Forbes magazine summed up. The following is a fivestep guide to making small talk from Bernardo J.Carducci, the director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast,US.Lets have a look.
1.Getting started
Begin by talking about the setting, such as the weather outside or the room you are in (“Its cold in here, isnt it?”).The purpose of talking about the setting is to show the other person that you are willing to make a conversation.

4.Expanding the topic
The goal is to keep the conversation going. At every stage, you should be careful not to talk too much. But dont let the other person dominate the conversation either. If that starts to happen, mention something about yourself when he or she takes a breath.
5.A polite ending
When ending a conversation, let the person know youll be leaving soon, express gratitude for the conversation and set the stage for a future conversation. For example, you could say,“I really must be going soon, but I had a great time chatting with you.I really liked hearing your opinion about that new movie.Heres my phone number.Call or text me if you know of any other movies you think I might enjoy.”

One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good science storybook.I was so interested in the story I was reading that I did not notice that it was getting dark. When I realised it was too dark for me to read easily, I put the book down and got up to turn on the light.Just then I heard someone crying,“Help! Help!” It seemed to come from the trees at the other end of the yard.I looked out but it was now too dark to see anything clearly.
Almost immediately I heard the cry again. It sounded like a child. I decided that I should have a look in the yard, just in case someone was in trouble.I turned on the light and found for myself a flashlight and a stick in the room.I thought they might be useful.Armed with these, I went out into the yard.Once again I heard the cry and this time there was no doubt that it came from the trees at the far end of the yard.“Whos there?” I called out as I walked across the yard towards the trees. But there was no answer. With the help of my flashlight, I searched all over that end of the yard, including the branches of the trees.
There was no sign of anybody or anything.I came to the conclusion that my imagination was playing tricks on me, probably because of the story I was reading about strange creatures on another planet. Feeling rather foolish about hunting around in my own backyard, I went back into the house and put the stick and the flashlight away.I had just sat down to read my book again when I was frightened by the cry of “Help! Help!” from right behind me.I dropped my book and jumped up.There, sitting on my book was a large green and red bird.It was my neighbours parrot ! 高考英語閱讀練習題及答案解析 6
Many people in high school cannot wait to go to college and leave their hometown behind.Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college. One of the first considerations may be finance.State and public colleges are often the least expensive.Often, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons. Another major factor is location.
Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities.A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college.Distance from home may also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate. School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teachers, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a “people_person” and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting.
Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decisionmaking process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you. Crucially, one must take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match.Similarly, an average school for an aboveaverage student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard.Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.

高考英語閱讀練習題及答案解析 7
Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that man and animals possess if they are used. If fire didn’t hurt when it burned, children would play with it until their hands were burned away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burnt it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which man and animals might soon die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fear has given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
60. Children would play with fire until their hands are burnt away if _________.
A. they were not well educated at school B. they had never played with fire before
C. they had no sense of pain D. they were fearful of pain
61. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because _________.
A. they have gained experience B. they are warned of the danger and take quick action
C. they jump out of the way in time D. they are calm in face of danger
62. What is implied but not stated in the passage?
A. Too much fear is harmful B. Fear is always something helpful
C . Fear is something that can be avoided
D. Fear ought to be used as our guide in our life
63. The best title for this passage should be __________.
A. No Pains, No Gains B. Pain and Actions
C. The Value of Fear D . The Reason Why People Fear
參考答案:60—63 CBAC

Vienna-In spite of Iraq’s decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11- nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC)will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided Tuesday in Vienna.
The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization’s president, Charkid Kheria of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable, so quota increases were not necessary.
The E.U. Commission has expressed concern about Iraq’s output stop. A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.
Saudi Arabia’s Oil Minister Ali Al-Nuaimi had earlier said there would not be any shortfall of oil in the market. The organization had already taken steps to fill the gap, he said. OPEC Secretary General Ali Rodriguez added that the period of Iraq’s output stop was not known, so other exporters were not going to lift quotas yet. If the market was destabilized , a suitable response could be made.
Iraq on Monday stopped shipments of crude oil to protest against the U.N. Security Council’s decision to extend the oil-for-food programme by only a month, instead of the normal six-month renewal. One student in particular is named John.I met him last year when he was a student in my English class. He sat in the back often, saying very little. However, I sensed that he was taking in all that I taught.John was never absent nor was he late.He seemed very mature for his age.
